Clinical Review on Surgical Acute Abdomen


Abstract
A clinical review was made on 1262 cases of surgical acute abdomen which were operated upon at the Department of General Surgery, Seoul Adventist Hospital from January of 1987 to December of 1989.
@ES The result was as follows:
@EN 1) The male to female ratio was 1 : 1.
2) The seasonal incidence indicated prevalence in spring & summer(57.2%), especially May and August.
3) The most prevalent age group was in between 21 to 50 years of age(50%).
4) Common diseases of surgical acute abdomen were acute appendicitis(75.3%), peptic ulcer perforation(5.7%), biliary tract disease(4.9%), intestinal obstruction(4.0%), abdominal trauma(3.4%) in order of frequency.
5) The most common disease was acute appendicitis in both sex.
6) The most common disease in each age group was as follows; acute appendicitis(67.3%) intussusception(20.4%) in infancy and childhood but the intussusception was 80% in infancy.
acute appendicitis(89.7%), mesenteric lymphadenitis(7.7%), abdominal trauma(4.3%) in adolescence.
acute appendicitis(76.8%), peptic ulcer perforoation(7.6%), abdominal trauma(4.6%) in adult acute appendicitis(57.7%), biliary tract disease(19.6%), intestinal obstruction(10.8%) in old age.
7) The incidence of acute appendicitis among the surgical acute abdomen was 75.3%, and also the rate of perforation was 23%.
8) Mean hospitalization was 10.48 days.
In 51% of the patients, the duration of hospitalization had within 7 days of admission.
9) Postoperative complication occurred in 189 cases(15%), the wound infection was the most common complication(58%).
10) Mortality rate was 0.55%(7 cases).
The most frequent cause of death was sepsis(71.4%).
